For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, saying,“I will tell of your name to my brothers;in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”And again,“I will put my trust in him.”And again,“Behold, I and the children God has given me.”Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

A Shiggaion of David, which he sang to the Lord concerning the words of Cush, a Benjaminite.O Lord my God, in you do I take refuge;save me from all my pursuers and deliver me,lest like a lion they tear my soul apart, rending it in pieces, with none to deliver.O Lord my God, if I have done this,if there is wrong in my hands,if I have repaid my friend with evilor plundered my enemy without cause, let the enemy pursue my soul and overtake it,and let him trample my life to the groundand lay my glory in the dust. SelahArise, O Lord, in your anger;lift yourself up against the fury of my enemies;awake for me; you have appointed a judgment.Let the assembly of the peoples be gathered about you;over it return on high. The Lord judges the peoples;judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousnessand according to the integrity that is in me.Oh, let the evil of the wicked come to an end,and may you establish the righteous—you who test the minds and hearts,O righteous God!My shield is with God,who saves the upright in heart.God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.If a man does not repent, God will whet his sword;he has bent and readied his bow;he has prepared for him his deadly weapons, making his arrows fiery shafts.Behold, the wicked man conceives eviland is pregnant with mischiefand gives birth to lies.He makes a pit, digging it out,and falls into the hole that he has made. His mischief returns upon his own head, and on his own skull his violence descends.I will give to the Lord the thanks due to his righteousness, and I will sing praise to the name of the Lord, the Most High.

To the choirmaster: with stringed instruments; according to The Sheminith. A Psalm of David.O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath.Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am languishing;heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled. My soul also is greatly troubled. But you, O Lord—how long?Turn, O Lord, deliver my life;save me for the sake of your steadfast love. For in death there is no remembrance of you;in Sheol who will give you praise?I am weary with my moaning;every night I flood my bed with tears;I drench my couch with my weeping. My eye wastes away because of grief;it grows weak because of all my foes.Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping. The Lord has heard my plea;the Lord accepts my prayer. All my enemies shall be ashamed and greatly troubled;they shall turn back and be put to shame in a moment.

And when a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to him, he said in a parable, “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. The ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.“No one after lighting a lamp covers it with a jar or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be made manifest, nor is anything secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care then how you hear, for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks that he has will be taken away.”Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,“What is man, that you are mindful of him,or the son of man, that you care for him?You made him for a little while lower than the angels;you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.”Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Give ear to my words, O Lord;consider my groaning.Give attention to the sound of my cry,my King and my God,for to you do I pray.O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice;in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you[a] and watch. For you are not a God who delights in wickedness;evil may not dwell with you.The boastful shall not stand before your eyes;you hate all evildoers. You destroy those who speak lies;the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house.I will bow down toward your holy templein the fear of you.Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousnessbecause of my enemies;make your way straight before me.For there is no truth in their mouth;their inmost self is destruction;their throat is an open grave;they flatter with their tongue.Make them bear their guilt, O God;let them fall by their own counsels;because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,for they have rebelled against you.But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;let them ever sing for joy,and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.For you bless the righteous, O Lord;you cover him with favor as with a shield.

One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and reclined at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”“A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their means.

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.

Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer!O men, how long shall my honor be turned into shame? How long will you love vain words and seek after lies?SelahBut know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him.Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent.SelahOffer right sacrifices, and put your trust in the LORD.There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!”You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound. In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

The disciples of John reported all these things to him. And John, calling two of his disciples to him, sent them to the Lord, saying, “Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?” And when the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?’” In that hour he healed many people of diseases and plagues and evil spirits, and on many who were blind he bestowed sight. And he answered them, “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good news preached to them. And blessed is the one who is not offended by me.”When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are dressed in splendid clothing and live in luxury are in kings’ courts. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is he of whom it is written,“‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’I tell you, among those born of women none is greater than John. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.)“To what then shall I compare the people of this generation, and what are they like? They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another,“‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance;we sang a dirge, and you did not weep.’For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by all her children.”
